Kochi: Kerala received the Allahabad High Court verdict on the Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhumi title suit with peace and calmness. However, the tight restrictions have not yet been taken off in the state. The verdict was received with mixed response.
Kerala government decided to continue the restrictions imposed in the state in the wake of the Babri verdict till Friday night. The decision was taken in a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister yesterday. High security was ensured in the state since Thursday morning. There was extra security for places of worship and important centres like railway stations, airports, bus stations and coastal areas. District Collectors were entitled to enforce special measures including prohibitory orders as per the circumstances in their respective places. Group SMS, posters and demonstrations were prohibited. All these would continue till Friday night. However, a final decision on the matter would be taken in the analysis meeting today. Meanwhile, three people have been arrested for allegedly sending provocative SMS in Kollam district.
The Babri verdict has come without any problems, sighed state Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan. The details of the case may be discussed later. We should be ready for peaceful acts. No law and order problems have been reported anywhere in the state, he added.
The verdict of the Allahabad High Court is strange, opined Js VR Krishna Iyer. This is not a right verdict. The land should be given either to the Muslims or to the Hindus. Instead, three judges have divided the land into three pieces which is not right. The verdict is a mere trick. Judges should think and act beyond caste and community. The verdict raises doubts as to whether communalism has found place among them too. He criticised the delay of 60 years in giving verdict in a title suit. He also criticised the Supreme Court for giving orders to the High Court on when and how to give the verdict. He said it was insulting to the 5000-year old, matured and cultured, country that lakhs of police and army personnel were deployed miscalculating that people would fight among themselves in the name of a verdict.
The court verdict in the Babri case should be received with restraint, said Panakkad Hyderali Shihab Thangal, Muslim League state president. All should keep love and harmony with each other. The unity and stability of the country should not be wounded. All parties had earlier itself said that the court verdict coming after 60 years should be respected, and the Muslim League stands firm in the opinion. The verdict should be seen as a part of the country’s judicial process. Further procedures also should be followed in the legal way, he added.
The Hindu Aikya Vedi welcomed the verdict saying it declared strong faith in and solidarity with the national heritage. The state BJP opined that the verdict was historic and admiring. The central government has the obligation to implement the verdict, which was acceptable to all and exemplary, without any delay, said party president V Muraleedharan.
