‘The magic begins today’

New Delhi : With full-page newspaper advertisements, the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee Sunday went full throttle to promote the Oct 3-14 event that kicks off with a spectacular opening ceremony at 7 p.m.

Appearing in all major dailies, the advertisement was headlined “The magic begins today”. With fireworks bursting overhead, the majestic Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies, formed the backdrop for the advertisment, with smaller photographs beneath of the different Games venues.

“Today is that day of magic we have all been waiting for…let’s come out and play,” the advertisment proclaimed, highlighting the Games anthem “Jiyo, Utho, Badho, Jeeto” composed by Oscar-winning maestro A.R. Rahman.

The advertisement also had details of the events, online and tele booking information, advisories, conveyance options to reach the venue, a detailed map of the Nehru stadium and a list of prohibited items.

A separate but smaller advertisment featuring prominent Indian film stars and sports personalities was titled “Hum saath hain jee jaan se” (We are together in heart and spirit).

Commencing at 7 p.m. the the inaugural ceremony will encapsulate 5,000 years of India’s culture. Divided into six segments, it will feature some 7,000 performers.

Some 7,000 athletes from 71 countries will vie for 829 medals in 17 disciplines at the Games.
