New Delhi : Venu Rajamony, an officer of the Indian Foreign Service and India’s former consul general in Dubai, has been named joint secretary, multilateral institutions, in the finance ministry.
The name of Rajamony, who was serving as the joint secretary for energy security in the external affairs ministry, has been approved by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, a senior official in the ministry said Tuesday.
Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao had taken up the issue of appointing officers of the Indian Foreign Service in the Department of Economic Affairs with Finance Secretary Ashok Chawla earlier in June, the official added.
Rajamony’s position involves dealing with institutions like the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the African Development Bank and the International Fund for Agricultural Development.
He will also head official-level negotiations on loan agreements and disbursements of funds to various implementing agencies, while also supervising the implementation of projects within the country, officials said.
The topper of the 1986 batch of the Foreign Service who is fluent in the Chinese language, Rajamony has served the Indian missions in Washington DC, Beijing, Geneva, Hong Kong and Dubai.
He holds a Master’s in international studies from the Jawaharlal Nehru University, and a degree in law from the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala, and started as a journalist with a leading national daily here.
