New Delhi : Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday evening, amid speculations that the central government is to announce an Eid package to restore peace in the violence-hit Kashmir Valley.
“The PM will discuss the situation in the valley with Omar,” an official in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) told IANS.
The discussions will be followed up at the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) and a full cabinet meeting Thursday, official sources said.
Political circles have been hinting at a relief package to the violence-hit valley to be announced on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr Saturday.
The package is expected to include revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act from Srinagar and some other districts, withdrawal of cases related to stone-pelting in the past three months and an employment scheme.
At least 69 civilians, mostly teenagers and young men, have been killed in firing by security forces on stone-pelting street protestors since June 11.
The cycle of violence has led to frequent shutdowns and curfews in the valley for the past three months.
