Left wants forces in Kashmir to be accountable

New Delhi: “The security forces should be made accountable and action should be taken for human rights violations and excesses”, leaders of the Left parties said at an all-party meeting on Kashmir chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here Wednesday.

Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) general secretary Prakash Karat and Communist Party of India (CPI) general secretary A.B. Bardhan demanded the withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from Srinagar and other urban centres, a release issued by the Left parties said.

The Left leaders also demanded the release of youth arrested in the recent incidents of street protests. Relief should be provided to those injured and those permanently incapacitated, the release said.

Steps for an economic relief package for the trade and commerce sectors and an employment package for the youth were also demanded by the Left leaders.
