Malappuram: All liquor shops in the state should be shut down in the wake of the hooch tragedy in Malappuram that killed 25 people, demanded P Mujeeb Rahman, state president of the Solidarity Youth Movement. He was addressing the media after visiting the houses of the victims of the tragedy.
Mujeeb Rahman said that the government should not risk the lives of poor people just because liquor sales are bringing huge revenue to the state treasury. These tragedies were the outcome of the special-interested alliances that different governments have with the liquor-lottery tycoons. Liquor and lottery that annihilate the lives and livelihood of poor people are immoral and the government should be able to say no to them. The Solidarity would lead strong agitation for the ban of the two menaces in the state, he said.
He also informed that the Solidarity had undertaken the expenses for the education and rebuilding of house of Soumya, who parents were killed in the tragedy. Jamath e Islami Malappuram district president Prof P Ismail, Solidarity district general secretary Naser Keezhuparambu, district secretary Muneeb Karakunnu, Shukoor Kalikavu and Janakeeya Vikasana Munnani chairman Gafoor accompanied Mr Mujeeb Rahman in the visits to the victims’ houses.
