New York: Over 50 children in a school in New York’s Brooklyn area were asked to leave because officials thought it was “overcrowded”.

The 54 students had spent a full two weeks into the school year at the Marine Park middle school when they got the news.

Joy Solomon, an 11-year-old whose parents enrolled her in early September, was among those who were suddenly sent home Wednesday, the New York Post reported.

“Now? Two weeks into the school year – now they’re telling us to get lost,” said Joy’s mom, Bela Solomon. “I cried all the way to the house. It’s a nightmare.”

Meanwhile, education department officials said 54 kids were “transferred” after the school requested to cap its enrolment.

A department spokesman did not say whether parents had received a warning letter.

“We understand this is frustrating for families, and regret not communicating better,” he said.
