Candlelight march to support Hazare crusade

By IANS,

New Delhi : Hundreds of students and human rights activists Wednesday evening held a candlelight march from India Gate to Jantar Mantar where reformer Anna Hazare is observing a fast-unto-death for a more stringent anti-graft law — Lokpal (ombudsman) Bill.

The Lokpal Bill 2010 provides for filing complaints of corruption against the prime minister, ministers and MPs with the ombudsman.

However, Hazare says the bill in its present form is toothless and his supporters have drafted a separate Jan Lokpal bill that calls for the Lokpal and Lokayuktas (in states) being independent of government control. The draft also provides for tougher jail terms for corruption than what the government bill prescribes.
