New Delhi : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Thursday said it agrees with the essence of social activist Anna Hazare’s demand for a stronger instrument against corruption and said the country needs an effective Lokpal Bill to cover bureaucrats and politicians.
“The Bharatiya Janata Party agrees with the essence of the demand and the Gandhian way of protest. That’s why we have supported him,” BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said here.
He said dialogue with civil activists has not succeeded as the government was making the mistake it made while dealing with the demand for Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into 2G spectrum scam.
“The government is making the same mistake as it did with demand for JPC – not conceding the demand in time. It will eventually agree but after getting the brickbats,” he said.
Javadekar said the draft of the Lokpal Bill brought out by the government was “toothless.”
“There is urgency to have a more effective law to cover bureaucrats and political class,” he added.
Asked about Hazare having made remarks against the political class, Javadekar said in a democracy, people are entitled to their opinion and it is not necessary to agree to all their views.
