The clash occurred in Russell Square area of the Bangladesh capital, after the bus running between Mirpur and the university campus hurried through and jumped the traffic signal as the students were late for their examinations, a student told the New Age daily.

Police and traffic sergeants along with Rapid Action Battalion personnel stopped the bus and allegedly abused the students.

The students said when they protested against use of abusive words, the security personnel began beating them.

Soon after, students riding on another bus on the same route joined them and assaulted the police personnel, the daily said.

A police motorcycle was set on fire.

University proctor K.M. Saiful Islam Khan said the bus had indeed jumped the signal as many students aboard it were to take exams.

“At that time, a police constable hurled abusive words that made the students angry,” he said.

Syed Nurul Islam, additional deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said seven people were injured — among them an assistant commissioner, two sergeants and a constable.

Police have filed a case accusing the university students of assaulting policemen.
