By TCN News,

Bengaluru: Abdunnasir Maudany, who is in the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in Karnataka in connection with the 2008 Bengaluru serial blasts, has approached the Supreme Court for bail. His bail plea will be considered by the apex court on April 21. The bail plea was submitted via lawyers Sanjay Jain and Adolph Mathew, according to reports.

The bail plea reportedly says that Maudany is charged with conspiracy only and that the prosecution has not been able to provide evidence for the same. Maudany was rejected anticipatory bail and later bail by the Karnataka High Court and lower courts in the state. He was arrested only hours before the Supreme Court considered his anticipatory bail plea, which then couldn’t grant him the same as he was already arrested.

Maudany, chairman of Kerala’s PDP, is the 31st accused in the blasts that rocked the Bengaluru city on June 25, 2008. He was arrested by the Karnataka police from Kerala on August 17, 2010. After police custody of 10 days, Maudany was remanded to judicial custody which has been extended ever since. Maudany submitted a bail plea at the Karnataka High Court as his bail plea was earlier rejected by a lower court. The Karnataka High Court postponed the case several times on the request of the prosecution before rejecting the bail plea on February 11, stating Maudany might try to influence the witnesses if granted bail.

The trial proceedings in the case have already begun in the No 34 City Civil Court inside the Parappana Agrahara Central Jail early this month. The trial has been postponed to July 7 on the request of the accused as they needed three months’ time to appoint consuls. The trial proceedings could not be begun earlier as the handing over of the chargesheet to the trial court was delayed due to technicalities, according to reports. The case was handed over to the trial court by the First Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in December 2010.
