Karachi : Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan rejected reports that he is ‘angry’ over the cricket board’s decision to overlook him for the tour of West Indies which gets underway with a Twenty20 International in St. Lucia Thursday.
Younis tried to squash the impression that he was unhappy with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) decision to ‘rest’ him following the World Cup in which he flopped after making a promising start to the quadrennial spectacle with back-to-back fifties.
The senior batsman vowed to give his best for Pakistan whenever he is presented with a chance to represent his country, adding that he is available for national duty in any format of the game.
“I’m not angry with anybody,” said Younis, who made news by refusing to speak to reporters at an event in Karachi recently. “At that event I was approached by the media but I told them I’m not here for a press conference. As a player I can’t say much. My job is to perform on the field which is why it’s my wish to stay away from the limelight,” said Younis, who stood down as Pakistan captain just months after leading them to the ICC World Twenty20 title.
The experienced batsman was ‘rested’ for the tour of West Indies along with several other seasoned players as the selectors opted for a few rookies in the touring party.
Younis said that since quitting captaincy, he has been trying to avoid the spotlight off the field.
“I’ve been trying to stay away from the spotlight off the field because I believe that as a player my job is to play for my country to the best of my abilities,” he said.
