Lucknow: Taking strong action against inactive officers who failed to control communal violence in Meerut on Sunday, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati yesterday ordered suspension of Meerut zone DIG Jai Narayan Singh and transferred DM Subhash Chandra Sharma.
Communal clashes erupted on Sunday after beating of imam Hafiz Iqrar of Qazipura mosque by some youths of other community. In the widespread violence that followed about 100 shops were gutted and dozens of vehicles torched. The police have so far arrested 21 people in the connection.
Media reports say the situation has returned to normal on Tuesday as shops, offices and schools were opened. However, entire Meerut town has been converted into police camp as armed police personnel have been deployed in every nook and cornor of the communally sensitive town.
