Bulandshahr (Uttar Pradesh) : Agitated over being allotted low marks in their exams due to poor attendance, a large number of students of a private engineering college in this Uttar Pradesh town Thursday went on a rampage and fought pitched battles with the police, an officer said.
A group of 50-odd students of Brahmanand College resorted to vandalism on the college premises and indulged in heavy brick batting when police prevented them from carrying out violent demonstrations.
The protesters alleged that the teachers intentionally failed them, at the behest of the college administration, because they were not regular in attending their classes.
Police had to baton charge the protesters, who also tried to set afire some of the vehicles parked on the campus.
“We had to use the force in order to prevent the students from being unruly. However, no student received serious injuries in the incident,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Prakash Chandra told reporters in Bulandshahr, some 300 km from Lucknow.
“In the wake of the violent protests by the students, security on the college campus has been strengthened,” he added.
