New Delhi : Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal Friday said the government is in the process of developing a vocational curriculum in consultation with the industry to improve the employability of students.
Replying to a question in the Rajya Sabha on the employability of engineering graduates, Sibal said the programme was for launching a national vocational framework which would be ready either by the end of this year or next year.
“We will have industry set the syllabi for the students so that when they complete their course employability is not a problem,” Sibal said, adding that consultations have been held with different sectors of industry.
Answering a question on a recent report by National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) which said 75 percent of engineering graduates were not employable, the minister said the report did not paint the correct picture.
“This does not reflect the true picture in reference to all engineering graduates in India, it is only for the IT sector,” Sibal said.
He however agreed that soft skills were lacking in many graduates.
“We should not be dismayed with reports carried out by multi nationals but it is true large no of graduates need a lot of skill,” he said.
The minister also said that the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) was preparing a report on this which is likely to come out soon.
