“We will offer free medicines to all sections of the society at government hospitals from Oct 2,” Gehlot said in his Independence Day address at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium here.

The chief minister said the state government was serious in its intent to implement central government schemes for the poor and that a special project to provide housing to people living below poverty line (BPL) had already been launched.

“We are working towards eradicating poverty and have succeeded in achieving part of this goal. But we realise that a lot is yet to be done,” Gehlot said after unfurling the national flag.

The chief minister expressed concern over increasing corruption and said his government had taken steps to curb it. “My government’s efforts are to provide a transparent government,” Gehlot said adding that Rajasthan was the first state in the country where the Right to Information Act was implemented.

After a parade by personnel drawn from the police and other institutions, the Education Department and Sangeet Natak Academy, Jodhpur, presented a cultural programme. More than 1,100 schoolchildren presented an attractive folk dance.
