“We are relieved. We can now relax and reflect on the nature of the movement snd decide the future course,” Bhushan said, relieved that Anna Hazare had ended his fast.

“It was a roller coaster ride. We felt pessimistic at times. But we always felt that whatever happens in parliament, the movement engaged people across classes and barriers. Young people shed their cynicism and felt empowered. This was an achievement.”

Talking about the future, Bhushan said: “The focus will remain on the Lokpal bill. We will keep the pressure so that all important provisions of Jan Lokpal bill are included in the final bill.”

Bhushan said fundamental changes were needed to make Indian democracy more participatory in nature.

“There have been 100 ammendments in the constitution and more need to be made. Our democracy needs to be more participatory. Now with advancement of communication technology, the means to get people’s views on issues have become available.

“Our intermediate goals are immediate electoral and judicial reforms to improve the quality of governance,” he added.
