New Delhi : Congress Thursday described the Lokpal bill as the single-most powerful anti-graft law which will help launch the “biggest war on corruption”, adding that parties opposing the legislation will have to face the anger of people.
Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi told reporters that the government had kept its promise of bringing the bill.
“The Congress-led UPA government has not only kept its promise but has done so with sincerity and commitment and has put its best foot forward,” Singhvi said. “Which other dispensation had brought a law which would help launch the biggest war on corruption?”
Singhvi, who is also the chairman of the parliamentary standing committee which examined the bill, said if any party opposes the legislation and resorts to tactics of obstruction, they will have to answer the people and face their anger.
However, he also said the legislation should not be seen in isolation but part of a holistic web providing supporting structures without which one cannot win the war against corruption.
Earlier, Law Minister Salman Khurshid expressed confidence about the bill being passed by parliament.
“I am confident that this bill will be passed, and I appeal to all my companions (in parliament) to pass this bill,” he told reporters outside parliament.
