Mike Hussey frustrated with World Cup omission

Melbourne : Australia’s middle-order batsman Mike Hussey was frustrated at not being given an opportunity to regain fitness for the World Cup as afforded to all-rounder Andrew Symonds four years ago.

The 35-year-old Hussey said he should have been given time to prove his fitness for later matches — a latitude similar to that offered to Symonds in the Caribbean four years ago.

“The precedent has sort of been set from the last time with Andrew Symonds. He came in about the third or fourth game in the previous World Cup and played a really big part in our team. He was an important part of the team,” Hussey told Fox Sports.

“I was sort hoping that would be the same sort of thing for me really, that they’d give me every chance to have a crack at it really.”

Hussey was replaced in Australia’s 15-man squad after having surgery on a hamstring tendon about three weeks ago. The veteran left-hander had declared himself available for all but first two Australia matches — against Zimbabwe (Feb 21) and against New Zealand (Feb 25).

Off-spinner Jason Krezja and batsman Callum Ferguson replaced spinner Nathan Hauritz and Hussey in Australia’s squad.
