Malaysia: Muslims nationwide celebrate Prophet Muhammad’s birthday

Kuala Lumpur : Muslims in the country today celebrated Prophet Muhammad’s birthday with various activities, reminding themselves of the deeds and struggle of the prophet in upholding Islam.

Leaders addressing the gatherings called on Muslims to forge greater unity among the people in keeping with the theme of the celebration – 1Malaysia,1Ummah.

The national-level celebration was held in Putrajaya. It began with a procession by 10,315 people in 114 contingents over 2.4 km from Dataran Putra to Qiblat Walk at the Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Mosque.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Jamil Khir Baharomled the procession. Also joining the procession was Chief Secretary to the Government Mohd Sidek Hassan.

Yang di-Pertuan Agong (Malaysian King) Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin attended the celebration at the Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Mosque and addressed the gathering. Also present at the event were Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak and Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and their wives, as well as several Cabinet ministers.

In SEREMBAN, more than 8,000 people in 99 contingents from various sectors, organisations and schools participated in a procession and gathering at the Seremban Municipal Council field.

The procession was led by the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Munawir, and the Tunku Ampuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Aishah Rohani Tengku Besar Mahmud.

Menteri Besar (Chief Minister) Mohamad Hasan, state executive councillors, State Legislative Assembly Speaker Razak Mansor, State Secretary Mat Ali Hassan, heads of government departments and community leaders also participated in the procession.

In JOHOR BAHARU, the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, and more than 3,000 people participated in the celebration at the Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque.

Also present were the Sultanah of Johor, Raja Zarith Sofiah Sultan dris Shah, the Tunku Mahkota of Johor, Tunku Ismail Ibrahim, and other members of the royalty.

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman, State Mufti Datuk Mohd Tahrir Shamsudin, Johor Islamic Affairs Council advisor Datuk Nooh Gadut, state executive councillors and senior government officers also took part in the celebration.

In KOTA BAHARU, the celebration was held last night. The Sultan of Kelantan, Sultan Mohammad V, attended Maghrib prayers with about 3,000 people at the Muhammadi Mosque.

Also present were Kelantan Menteri Besar Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, Deputy Menteri Besar uk Ahmad Yakob, state executive councillors and heads of federal and state departments.

In KANGAR, the Kampung Katong Village Development and Security Committee held a programme for about 200 villagers at the village surau. Perlis does not hold a state-level celebration.

A cemetery clean-up was carried out in several areas in Ulu Pauh and a social gathering was organised at the Ulu Pauh mosque.

In KUANTAN, more than 2,000 people participated in a procession and attended a gathering at the Silver Jubilee Hall.

The Sultan of Pahang, Sultan Ahmad Shah, the Tengku Mahkota of Pahang, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, and the Tengku Puan Pahang, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, also attended the celebration.

Also present were state executive councillors, elected representatives, State Secretary Muhammad Safian Ismail, and heads of government departments.

In KOTA SAMARAHAN, Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud addressed a gathering of 8,000 people after a procession led by Yang Dipertua Negeri Abang Muhammad Salahuddin Abang Barieng.

In KOTA KINABALU, Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri (Governor) Panglima Juhar Mahiruddin and his wife Datin Seri Panglima Norlidah RM Jasni led a procession of about 10,000 people from the Merdeka Padang in the city centre to Wisma Muis.
