London : Two soldiers from the Royal Logistic Corps were killed in a fire in Helmand province Monday, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in London announced.
“Initial indications are that the soldiers’ deaths were due to a domestic fire at Camp Bastion. The incident is under investigation and more information will be released when known. It is not believed to be a result of enemy action,” the MoD said.
Spokesman for Camp Bastion, Wing Commander Martin Tinworth, said that both soldiers were “involved in vital support work for the UK forces who continue to bring hope and stability across Afghanistan.”
The latest deaths bring the total number of British soldiers killed in Afghanistan to 356 since the overthrow of the Taliban regime in 2001.
Camp Bastion is the main British military base in Afghanistan with a capacity to accommodate some 21,000 people. It is situated northwest of Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand Province, and exists to be the logistics hub for operations in Helmand.
