London : The number of people charged, prosecuted and convicted of terrorism offences in the UK has declined in the past four years, government figures show.
Terrorist-related cases reached their peak in 2006/7, when a total of 75 people were charged, but by 2009/10 the number dwindled to just 25.
The number being prosecuted during the last four years show a bigger fall from 67 to only 14 in 2009/10, while those being convicted plummeted to just 9 from 50 in 2006/07.
The drop, revealed in a written parliamentary reply published on Tuesday, has also being accompanied with a fall in the ratio of successful convictions of prosecutions from 67% to 36%.
Despite the fall, the terror threat perceived in the UK has been maintained at a heightened level, largely varying between ‘severe’, representing that an attack is highly likely, and ‘substantial’ the current risk that an attack is a strong possibility.
