Sixteen Indian boxers for junior Women’s World Championship

New Delh: Sixteen junior and youth boxers will represent India in the Women’s World Championship scheduled in Turkey in April.

The April 21-May 1 event is the first of its kind and will display emerging boxing talents from all over the world and it is a good opportunity for young Indian women to sharpen their skills at the international arena.

“These championships will add sheen to the youth and junior women’s boxing. It will be an encouragement for women boxers,” said I. Venkateshwara Rao, coach-in-charge at the junior women’s coaching camp.

Eight boxers in each category were picked up after the Indian Boxing Federation (IBF) conducted trials in Trivandrum and Visakhapatnam.

The selection committee for youth women comprised Arjuna awardee Devarajan, and Dronacharya awardee and chief coach D. Chandralal.

The committee for junior women consisted of Arjuna awardee Rajendra Prasad, Arjuna awardee Mohd. Ali Qamar, E. Chiranjevi and coach-in-charge I. Venkateshwara Rao.

Youth Women’s World Championship: S Sarjubala Devi (48 kg), Sanasri Brahma (51 kg), Pwilao Basumatary (54 kg), Anjali Machahari (57 kg), Poonam Chahal (60 kg), Minu Basumatary (64 kg), Heena Tokas (69 kg), Alary Bord (75 kg).

Junior Women’s World Championship: Lalenkawli (46 kg), H Chanchan Devi (48 kg), Nikhat Zareen (50 kg), Lalfakzuali (52 kg), Pinki Kachari (54 kg), Neeraj Bala (57 kg), S Marathamma (60 kg), Laxmi Wagh (63 kg).
