Ahmedabad : Welcoming a Gujarat special court’s decision to acquit 63 people, including one of the key accused Maulvi Saeed Umarji, in the 2002 Godhra train burning case, his son Tuesday said the judgment has strengthened his faith in the judiciary.
“The way he was kept in jail for eight years, it was a big injustice. Our confidence in judiciary has been strengthened by the special court’s judgment,” said Maulvi’s son Saeed Umarji.
Additional sessions judge P.R. Patel delivered the verdict in confines of the Sabarmati Central Jail here. He convicted 31 people but acquitted 63.
Thirty one people were held guilty by the special court for the Godhra train carnage in which 59 people, mostly ‘kar sevaks’ returning from Ayodhya on the Sabarmati Express, were burnt to death, triggering the 2002 Gujarat communal riots.
