The HI development committee, which met here under the chairmanship of former captain Pargat Singh, shortlisted 25 Indian applicants for the posts of national coach and support staff.

Also shortlisted were 10 foreign coaches, who will be later called to make a presentation.

“As of now, the committee has decided to call the Indian applicants for making their presentation and for discussions on Jan 22-23.

“We will decide on the foreign coaches later,” said HI secretary general Narendra Batra.

The term of men’s team coach Jose Brasa’s expired after the Asian Games in November and the exercise for selecting his successor started after it became clear he would not be retained.

Pargat Singh said HI was looking for a coach who could bring out the real talent of the players.

“Last year, in whichever tournament I observed the team, I found it was making so many lapses in defence. Every coach has has own method of operating. There are lot of coaches available. But we have to see what kind of coach the team needs and then decide. We need a coach who can bring out the real talent of the players,” he said.

Pargat Singh said HI was also looking at devising a coaching mechanism.

“We do not have a coaching mechanism. We will set up a mechanism so that whoever wants to get trained will go through that system. There will be a proper gradation process. We will grade the coaches according to their level of performance.”

HI also announced a new 10-member selection committee comprising Balbir Singh, Syed Ali, Rekha Bhide, Rajbir Kaur, Manohar Topno, Thoiba Singh, Harpreet Singh, AB Subbaiah, Sita Mehta and Anil Aldrin.

Sukhvir Singh Grewal has been appointed director of coaching and development for both men and women.
