Berlin : Nearly two-third of Germans (63 percent) support a fixed date for a withdrawal of their troops from Afghanistan, according to a survey published Tuesday by the Hamburg-based stern news magazine.
Only 32 percent of those questioned say German soldiers should stay in Afghanistan as long as they are needed to stabilize the security situation in that war-stricken country.
Among those backing a set withdrawal date, some 59 percent say the Afghan pullout should be completed by the end of this year and 28 percent say by the end of 2012.
The German parliament is to vote on renewing the Afghanistan mandate later this month.
Opposition MPs from the Social Democratic Party and Green party have called for a fixed pullout date, however the co-ruling Christian Democrats oppose such a move.
