According to the official, a dome was under construction in a section of the park and iron girders were being welded next to some thermocol boxes, sparking the blaze.

“The sparks from the welding came in contact with the boxes, which ignited instantly. Six fire tenders were rushed to the spot and it took almost an hour to douse the flames,” the official said.

All the 24 labourers working in the area escaped unhurt in the incident, he added.

“I saw some smoke coming from underneath the boxes and quickly informed the contractor who in turn called the fire department,”Pradip, a labourer hailing from Bihar, said.

The controversial park is the brainchild of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati as a tribute to B.R. Ambedkar, one of the architects of the constitution, and to her late mentor Kanshi Ram, the founder of the state’s ruling Bahujan Samaj Party.

A public suit has been filed in the Supreme Court protesting the wastage of public money in constructing the park, which also contains Mayawati’s statues. The court had last month given conditional approval for the park’s development, saying construction can take place in only 25 percent of its area.
