New Delhi : BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) Thursday said it has delivered a solution to address lawful interception of its messenger and internet services and denied that any such access would be enabled for corporate e-mail services.
“RIM has delivered a solution that enables India’s wireless carriers to address their lawful access requirements for our consumer messaging services, which include BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) and BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) e-mail,” the company said in a statement.
“We also wish to underscore that this enablement of lawful access does not extend to BlackBerry Enterprise Server, which is essentially an enterprise VPN (Virtual Private Network) solution,” it added.
The company stuck to its earlier statements saying that no changes can be made to the security architecture for BlackBerry Enterprise Server customers since the security architecture is the same around the world and RIM has no ability to provide its customers’ encryption keys.
“RIM cannot access information encrypted through BlackBerry Enterprise Server given that neither RIM nor the wireless operators are ever in possession of the encryption keys,” it said.
Expressing concerns over possible use of Blackberry services by anti-social elements to stir social instability, the Indian government had threatened RIM to ban its services if the company denied the government access to its messenger and corporate communications.
RIM also said that the government has assured the company that all of its competitors shall also provide a lawful access capability to this same standard if they have not done it already.
