Ranchi: On a day when he was sacked from the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee over financial irregularities, Suresh Kalmadi, who is also the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president, arrived here Monday to take stock of the preparations for the 34th National Games.
Kalmadi visited the Khel Gaon – the games village – at Hotwar where the National Games will be held Feb 12-26. He was accompanied by union Tourism Minister Subodh Kant Sahay and senior officials.
Kalmadi also met Chief Minister Arjun Munda to discuss about the preparations.
The IOA president appreciated the infrastructure prepared for the games. The deadline for completion of infrastructure has been extended from Jan 31 to Feb 6.
The union government Monday sacked Kalmadi from the chairmanship of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee along with his aide Lalit Bhanot following a series of allegations of massive financial irregularities in holding the event last year.
The ouster came after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) voiced concern that the two were hindering the impartial investigation into the corruption allegations.
The CBI has registered three first information reports in the cases related to the mismanagement of Commonwealth Games funds.
Kalmadi’s offices and residences in Delhi and Pune were raided earlier this month by income tax sleuths. He also faced lengthy quizzing by the CBI.
