New York : The US demanded Tuesday that UN Special Rapporteur Richard Falk be sacked, after he made controversial comments regarding possible US involvement in the Sep 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington.
Falk, himself a US citizen, made comments that are “so noxious that it should finally be plain to all that he should no longer continue in his position on behalf of the UN,” US Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice said in a statement.
Rice noted that many delegates walked out of the hall when Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made “similarly slanderous remarks” before the UN General Assembly in September.
Falk is the UN special rapporteur on the human rights situation in occupied Palestinian territories. In a blog post dated Jan 11, Falk wrote of an “apparent cover up” and of “awkward gaps and contradictions in the official explanations” of the Sep 11 attacks.
Falk, a professor of International Law, is well known for his controversial views. Four years ago, for example, he compared Israeli policies regarding Arabs with those of the Nazis regarding Jews. Israel has since banned him from entering the country.
