Lucknow: A 22-year old woman was gang-raped in a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli, which is also the parliamentary constituency of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, police said Monday. Four of the five alleged rapists have been arrested.
The four were tracked down and arrested Monday, while the hunt is on for the fifth man who Sunday night allegedly enticed the young woman to a flat where she was raped by all of them.
The crime was committed in the well-guarded residential colony of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), that runs a huge power generation plant in Unchahar town in the district, neighbouring Lucknow.
According to a spokesman of the state police here, the woman was being pursued by her neighbour Ashish Misra, who lured her on the promise of getting her a job in the NTPC.
“Eventually, she fell into his trap and agreed to come to the NTPC office, some distance away from the village; but instead of taking her to the office, he enticed her into his friend’s flat in the colony, where four of his friends were already hiding,” the spokesman said.
Identified as Amit Jaiswal, Rehman, Gulbadan and Ashutosh Dwivedi – all in their 20s – the men raped her one after the other. Misra, who kept guard outside, then returned to rape her as well.
The FIR, later lodged by the victim stated that she was overpowered by all the four youth, who sexually assaulted her one by one.
“Cases have been registered under section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code against all the five, four of whom were arrested. We will soon get the fifth one too and see to it that they do not get spared under any circumstances,” Superintendent of Police Ajay Mohan Sharma told reporters in Rae Bareli, around 60 km from Lucknow.
