New Delhi: Delhi Mayor Rajni Abbi Monday said she was pained by Delhi Police Commissioner B.K. Gupta’s comments against women venturing out late in the night, even as a Delhi minister refused to comment on the issue.
“I am really pained to hear this,” Abbi told IANS.
Gupta, at a function here Saturday, said: “You can’t go out at 2 in the night and then say that you were a victim of crime.” He said that women should be accompanied by a relative or friend when travelling at night.
“It is really sad to hear this, is the police commissioner trying to shed his duty saying this,” Abbi asked.
“There are so many girls going to evening colleges, should they be locked at homes? This is not acceptable,” Abbi added.
The Delhi government has not officially commented on the issue. A Delhi minister, requesting anonymity, told IANS: “It is a very sensitive issue, I cannot comment on that.”
