Police Commissioner Sudhir Sinha told reporters that Shehzad’s wife was fed up due to daily beatings by her husband and hence, she informed the police to take revenge. Sinha, however, denied that there was any connection between the recovery of weapons and explosives from Shehzad and the Mumbai serial bomb blasts.

According to Sinha, the motive of Shehzad behind acquiring explosives and weapons was to create communal disturbances on during Jagannath Rathyatra on July 3 last in the city.

During preliminary interrogations, Shehzad revealed that his intention was to use the bombs during the yatra but could not do so due to heavy security arrangement all along the rathyatra route.

While one crude bomb and two country made guns were recovered from Shehzad’s residence, seven other bombs were recovered from the bank of Chandola Lake, about a km from his residence. A large number of Bengali Muslims are settled around the lake and several attempts had been made by the police in the past to dislocate them from the place. Most of the Bengalis Muslims are very poor and many of them survive on alms they collect from other Muslim areas of the city.

On diffusing the bombs, police found it contained pieces of glass, screws and shrapnels, with a potential to cause serious injuries. Police are trying to find out if there were more people linked with Shehzad in procurement of the weapons and explosives. Police believe that one person alone can not procure weapons and explosions illegally and store them. Police is sure that some more persons are with Shehzad.
