“Breivik planned to carry out a few more attacks on July 22, on a slightly different scale. However, something happened, about which I can’t yet speak, and his plans didn’t come to anything,” Geir Lippestad told Norway’s Aftenposten newspaper.

Police did not make any comment.

Breivik has confessed to a bomb attack near the prime minister’s office and shooting at a youth camp at Utoya island. He has, however, not accepted criminal responsibility, saying his actions were “atrocious but necessary” measures intended to “save Norway and Western Europe” from a “Muslim takeover”.

Lippestad believes his client is “insane”.
