Ahmedabad : The special public prosecutor for the 2002 Dipda Darwaja massacre during the post-Godhra riots in Gujarat, P.R. Agrawal, Thursday said he has withdrawn his request for permission of the Supreme Court appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) to resign from the case.
Agrawal said he has written a letter conveying his decision to SIT head R.K. Raghvan Tuesday and sought a personal hearing if the latter wants to consider his earlier communication.
Agrawal had May 17 written a letter to Raghavan, seeking permission to withdraw from the case. Agrawal had reportedly cited the non-cooperation of the trial judge, S.C. Srivastava.
He claimed the trial judge had shown unwillingness to hear his arguments.
“And after this, the witnesses and victims had given an application to change me as SPP (special public prosecutor) after expressing their dissatisfaction with my arguments. Such a situation was offending and therefore I wrote to him (Raghavan) seeking permission to resign,” he said.
He added that he has got a letter from the victims and witnesses written to the Supreme Court, whereby they had shown no dissatisfaction with him and had written only against the trial judge.
“And therefore, I have decided to withdraw my request for seeking permission to resign as the SPP in the case,” he said.
The case relates to the killing of 11 Muslims during the 2002 post-Godhra riots in Dipda Darwaja neighbourhood of Visnagar town in Mehsana district.
