He, however, said the party would win over 100 of the 119 assembly seats if it granted statehood to the region.

In the recent by-election to the Kadapa Lok Sabha seat, the Congress candidate lost to Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy by over 500,000 votes.

Keshava Rao advised the Congress leadership not to ignore the Telangana issue.

“We know it is a difficult issue,” he saidm referring to the statement made earlier by party veteran Ghulam Nabi Azad.

Azad had said in New Delhi that Telangana was not an easy issue. He said that since the Srikrishna committee had suggested six options, it was difficult to pick only one.

Keshava Rao said the Congress leaders including ministers, MPs and state legislators from the region would announce “direct action” if the central government did not respond to their demand for separate state by June 25.

The leaders had Sunday declared that they would leave for Delhi this week to put forward their demand before the leadership. They made it clear that it would be their last visit to Delhi on the issue.
