Lucknow : Coming out in support of veteran Gandhian Anna Hazare, people from different walks of life in this Uttar Pradesh capital Wednesday joined his day-long fast to protest the crackdown on yoga guru Baba Ramdev and his supporters.
Social activists, students, teachers and professionals from various domains converged at the Jhulelal Park to participate in the peaceful demonstration.
“Our fast that started 10 a.m. will end with Annaji’s fast at 6 in the evening,” Akhilesh Saxena, a Lucknow-based social activist and member of India Against Corruption (IAC), told reporters.
“People from various age groups, including women, are lending support to Annaji,” he added.
“Hazare’s fast is against undemocratic functioning of the central government. We all will continue to support his campaigns which are always launched for public interest,” Saxena added.
Said Dev Dutt Sharma, a law professor and social activist: “It’s high-time we all should get united and support Anna, who is undertaking campaigns against the autocratic functioning of the government.”
“Hazare has shown us the way. Now, it’s our responsibility to take his campaign forward. What the central government did against Ramdev and his supporters cannot be justified. It was a blatant violation of human rights,” he added.
