New Delhi: Contending that conflicting police versions raised suspicions, Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath Wednesday demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the killing of a 14-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh.

“It is important that truth is brought out. Justice cannot be ensured without a CBI investigation,” Tirath told reporters here.

The girl’s body was found hanging from a tree inside the Nighasan police station in Lakhimpur district June 10.

The death was initially dismissed by police as suicide, but a second autopsy confirmed the girl was strangulated. The girl’s family alleged that she was murdered.

The case is currently under state police investigation.

Earlier Wednesday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati vowed to bring to book the killers, but expressed the apprehension that a CBI inquiry could botch up the case.

The demand for a CBI probe has come from various quarters, including from the girl’s mother.
