Aligarh: The Aligarh Police has started probe into the alleged custodial death of 59-year-old Abdul Aziz, a fourth grade employee of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). Aziz, son of Nasir Ali, a resident of Kishori Bhawan, Anup Shahar Road under the Civil Lines police station in Aligarh district, had succumbed to torture in police custody on 8th May 2011.
The People’s Vigilance Committee on Human Rights (PVCHR) had approached IG office in Lucknow and National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Delhi seeking a magisterial probe into the custodial death.
The IG forwarded PVCHR Secretary General Dr Lenin Raghuvanshi’s letter to Superintendent of Police, Aligarh for further action. Acting on the letter, SP has initiated probe. He has also called Dr Lenin to record his statement before him.
In his letter dated 30th May 2011, SP, Aligarh Sunil Kumar Singh asked Dr Lenin to either personally or through his representative record his statement before him in this regard.
One day after the death, an F.I.R. was registered by Mr. Jamshed, the son of the deceased victim, against 8 persons, including two police officials associated with the Civil Lines police station under sections 302, 452, 323, 506, 102 B of Indian Penal Code.
