Varanasi: The National Commission for Minorities has sought report from Director General of Police, Uttar Pradesh on the harassment and torture of Varanasi youths Isa Azmi and Azhar Abbas by local policemen. The youths were brutally beaten by the cops on a minor scuffle between them and a shopkeer on 17th May 2011 and the police had even threatened to implicate them in terror cases.

Acting on the complaint from Dr Lenin Raghuvanshi, Secretary General, People’s Vigilance Committee on Human Rights (PVCHR), the National Commission for Minorities on 13th June 2011 wrote a letter to DGP, Uttar Pradesh and sought report on the complaint within 21 days.
The incident took place on Tuesday 17th May when Mohammad Isa Azmi, BA (2nd Year) student of Banaras Hindu University, was returning along with his classmate and local youth Azhar Abbas from a coaching centre in the city. Their bike hit the bike of a shopkeeper near Nadesar police outpost. Though there was no damage to his bike, the shopkeeper made it a big issue, called the local police. The police came and without going into detail they beat up the youth, took them to the police outpost and again beat them there.
