Mangalore: The first Karnataka state conference of the Campus Front of India was held in Mangalore on February 27. The conference raising the slogan ‘students for social change’ was inaugurated by Prof P Koya, Chief Editor of Malayalam daily ‘Thejas’.
Addressing the students at the Nehru Maidan, Mr Koya said that the revolution in the Middle East and North African countries should reach the Indian soil to bring a change in the social, political and economic system in the country. The people of Egypt have set an example by overthrowing corruption and dictatorship, he added.
The conference began in the morning when Campus Front state president Muhammed Shakir hoisted the national flag. Several topics such as terrorism, Indian democracy, education in neoliberal times etc were discussed in the seminar that followed. Students’ rally was held in the afternoon, which was followed by the public conference.
A Muhammed Yusuf, president of the Campus Front of India, said that the process of social change should begin from the campuses, by eradicating fascism and communalism. Shivsunder, writer and activist, urged the students to give more importance to social activities. He expressed his displeasure at the present conditions in which students are too much involved in only studies owing to the competitive job market. Abdul Salam Puthige, Chief Editor of Kannada daily ‘Vartha Bharati’, called upon the students to take studies and social activities together.
Activist Pattabhirama Somayaji, PFI general secretary KM Shareef, Campus Front National Advisory Council chairman Anis Ahmed and Karnataka SDPI President Majeed Kodlipet, Sahida Thasnim, Ajmal Ismail and Hasan Farooq also spoke.
