Around 56 labourers working at the company had complained to the district magistrate against alleged inhuman working conditions at the workplace. The authorities Thursday raided the place and released the workers, he said.

Udaipur district collector Hemant Gera said: “They (workers) did complain about being bonded workers. It is matter of investigation and the truth can only be ascertained after we conduct an enquiry.”

He said “the factory owners showed us the receipts of salaries given to the labourers, who claimed they were not being paid”.

The labourers said that they came in contact with a contractor a month ago in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura town who gave them train tickets to Udaipur, promising a Rs.5,500 monthly salary, food and accommodation.

“But we were not being paid and were kept as bonded labourers,” said 12-year old Umakant.

The administration is making arrangements to send them back to their native place.

“Action would be taken against factory management after proper investigation,” said a senior police officer.

Rajastan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot had recently ordered an enquiry into the rape of two bonded labourers in Baran district.
