Narathiwat (South Thailand) : A soldier was wounded Sunday after a bomb, suspected to be planted by insurgents, exploded in the trouble-plagued southern province of Narathiwat while national police chief Pol Gen Wichean Potephosree was inspecting a police flat which was damaged by a car bomb last week, police said.
Police said the incident occurred in Chanae district of Narathiwat province when eight soldiers travelling on four motorcycles were patrolling a village and were hit by the bomb hidden inside an iron box weighing about five kilogrammes. Initial investigation found that the bomb was detonated by a remote-controlled cell phone.
One soldier was wounded after the bomb exploded, police said.
The incident took place while Thailand’s police chief Pol Gen Wichean was inspecting the five-storey flat in nearby Si Sakhon district which was damaged after it was hit by car bomb last Monday. One policeman and a villager were wounded while 14 cars were damaged following the incident in which the building’s second storey was severely damaged by fire.
Pol Gen Wichean’s visit was aimed at boosting the morale of policemen and villagers living in the area.
An arrest warrant has been issued for one insurgent suspected to have been involved in the bombing of the police flat, while another warrant is to be issued soon for another accomplice, police said. The two suspects are now believed hiding in a mountain range between Si Sakhon and Ruso districts.
