Death of two teenagers sparks violence

Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh): The death of two teenagers, who drowned here Sunday, sparked violence as a mob fought pitched battles with police and damaged government vehicles in protest against the incident in this Uttar Pradesh city.

Anshu and Saurabh, aged around 15 years and residents of Kalyanpur neighbourhood, drowned while bathing in the Panki canal.

Locals alleged that police reach the accident site late. They said the teenagers could have been saved with the timely intervention of the authorities.

Agitated over the death of the teenagers, locals resorted to stone pelting and damaged police and district administration vehicles near the accident site.

“The situation is still tense, but under control. Heavy security arrangements have been made in the area,” police spokesperson A.R. Siddiqui told reporters in Kanpur, some 200 km from Lucknow.
