Washington : A student drops out of school every 26 seconds in the US, official figures reveal.
This startling revelation came as US President Barack Obama announced the launch of a programme to increase the number of Latin American students in the US during a visit to South America.
Education Secretary Arne Duncan has described the dropout among students as “unacceptable”, but acknowledged the fact that many schools do not offer “first-class education” to students.
The dropout rate rises to nearly 40 percent among African-Americans and Hispanics, according to Prensa Latina.
Seeking to combat this high dropout rate, education experts have now launched the “26 seconds” campaign, which allows young people to express their creative talent in music, sports and other fields on the site 26seconds.com.
