Raipur : The Chhattisgarh assembly Friday witnessed uproarious scenes after the opposition Congress party pressed for a reply from the ruling BJP about a farmer who committed suicide allegedly after a private company acquired his land but did not pay him.

Kartik Ratre committed suicide at the government office in Korba district after he failed to get payment for his land taken over years ago by a private company for setting up a coal-fired power plant.

“The farmer was forced to commit suicide because he lost his land to a private power firm that did not make any payment to him,” a Congress member said amid uproar.

The Congress alleged that the farmer was deprived of payment because of a corporate-government nexus which dominates the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) regime.

The Congress members insisted for a reply from the BJP and walked out of the assembly as the government chose to remain silent on the issue.
