New Delhi : The Supreme Court Monday asked the Haryana government why it was not reimbursing the railways for the losses caused by the Jat community’s rail blockage agitation in January.
An apex court bench of Justice G.S. Singhvi and Justice A.K. Ganguly also wanted the state government to explain what was the extent of the agitation.
The court said there was no limit to the powers of the state when a few agitators, in name of peaceful agitation blocked rail and road traffic.
Its observation came in the wake of Haryana Advocate General H.S. Hooda submitting the state was limited in exercising its powers in dealing with peaceful agitations.
The Jat agitation was in the wake of the arrest of 98 people who were allegedly involved in the arson against Dalits in Hisar district’s Mirchpur village, around 300 km from Chandigarh. A physically challenged girl and her father were burnt alive in the violence last April.
