“The Punjab Police has become the first force in the country that has issued Unique Identification Number (UID) to all members of its force, right from constable to DGP rank, besides all ministerial staff working with the Punjab Police,” DGP P.S. Gill said Thursday while launching the first UID here.

Gill said that the IDs will be issued on the bases of year of recruitment, unit, rank and belt number at the time of recruitment.

He said that the IDs will help in tracing the policemen and the number would be printed by UV-technology to check fake ID cards. The cards will be issued from the police headquarters here.

About the move to designate all personnel as officers, Gill said: “This is a novel measure to motivate the police force. It has been decided to change the nomenclature of every employee of the police department to officer.”

Constables and head constable rank employees will be known as junior enrolled police officers, while assistant sub-inspectors, sub-inspector and inspectors will be known as senior enrolled officers.

The DGP said that deputy superintendents of police, deputy commissioners of police, additional superintendents of police and other higher ranked officers have been placed in the category of superior police officers.
