Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani Thursday inaugurated the Chashma-2 nuclear power plant, about 280 km south-west of Islamabad.

Pakistan’s first nuclear power reactor started in 1971 near Karachi. The second is Chashma-1 in Punjab and it started in May 2000.

Gilani said the completion of the nuclear power plant three months ahead of the scheduled time was due to the joint efforts of Chinese and Pakistani teams.

“Completion of this project takes to even greater heights the long and time-tested friendship between the two countries and their people,” Associated Press of Pakistan quoted Gilani as saying.

The prime minister said two more power plants under construction at the site would help in paving the way to meet the power generation target of 8800 MW by 2030.
