Bangalore: Hours after the Supreme Court Friday restored membership of 16 rebel lawmakers, Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa convened the assembly session for May 16.
“The session is for passing the budget and will meet for about 10 or 12 days,” Yeddyurappa told reporters here.
He said he respected the decision of the Supreme Court to quash the disqualification of the 16 lawmakers, 11 of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and five independents, for rebelling against him Oct 11 last year.
The rebellion had reduced Yeddyurappa to a minority in the 225-member assembly (including one nominated). He, however, won the confidence vote as the 16 were disqualified just before the vote.
He said the 11 lawmakers continued to be in the BJP and hence the party now has 121 members in the assembly, including the speaker.
Yeddyurappa ruled out Speaker K.G. Bopaiah’s resignation following the apex court decision to restore the membership of the 16 legislators.
